Writing a Formal Complaint to Your Landlord (In German)

Why a Formal Letter?

A formal letter (eine formelle Beschwerdebrief) shows you’re serious. It creates a record of your complaint and protects you if things don’t get resolved quickly. It’s much better than just talking to your landlord informally.

What to Include in Your Letter

Here’s what you need to include:

1. Your Contact Information: Your full name, address, and phone number.

2. The Landlord’s Information: Their full name and the name of the property management company (if applicable).

3. The Date: The date you are writing the letter.

4. A Clear Subject Line: Clearly state the reason for your complaint.

5. A Detailed Description of the Problem: Explain exactly what happened, when it happened, and how it affects you. Be specific!

6. What You Want the Landlord to Do: State clearly what you expect them to fix or do.

7. A Polite Closing: Use a polite phrase like “Mit freundlichen Grüßen” (Sincerely).

8. Your Signature: Sign the letter by hand.

  • Sehr geehrte/r Herr/Frau [Landlord’s Name],

Important Tips

  • Keep a copy of the letter for your records.
