Vocational training: Duale Ausbildung system

Mein Weg: Die Duale Ausbildung in Deutschland

My name is John Doe, and I’m learning English. I wanted to tell you a little bit about something really important in Germany: the Duale Ausbildung. It’s a very special way to get a job and learn how to do it.

What is it exactly? It’s like a combination of school and work. You spend part of your time learning at a Berufsschule – that’s a special school for vocational training. You learn the theory, the facts, the ‘why’ behind things. Then, you spend the other part of your time working in a company. You learn the practical skills, the ‘how’ – how to actually do the job.

For example, let’s say I want to become a Industriemechaniker (Industrial Mechanic). I’d start my mornings at the Berufsschule, learning about engines and machines. “Die Kurbelwelle ist sehr wichtig für den Motor,” I would learn. (The crankshaft is very important for the engine.) Then, I’d go to a factory and actually fix machines. “Ich muss jetzt die Maschine warten,” I’d say. (I need to maintain the machine now.)

Mary Carry is a Kaufmann/in für Büromanagement (Business Management Assistant). She spends half her time in a company office, learning how to use computers and manage documents. “Ich lerne, wie man Rechnungen erstellt,” she told me. (I’m learning how to create invoices.) The other half, she’s at the Berufsschule learning about accounting and business administration.

It’s really common for people to study for a Fachabitur – that’s like the German equivalent of A-levels – after their Ausbildung. This lets them go on to university, if they want.

The best part is, the company and the Berufsschule share the costs. It’s not too expensive, and it’s a really good way to get a job after your training.

Many people, like my friend David Müller, who is learning to be a Elektroniker (Electronics Technician), tell me, “Die Ausbildung ist super! Ich lerne viel und verdiene auch Geld.” (The training is great! I’m learning a lot and earning money too.)

You’ll often hear people say, “Wir machen eine Duale Ausbildung.” (We are doing a Duale Ausbildung.) It’s a normal, everyday thing in Germany.

It’s a great system, and I think it’s a really good idea for anyone who wants to learn a trade and build a career.
