Understanding job advertisements: Requirements

Verstehen Sie Stellenanzeigen: Die Anforderungen

Hello, my name is John Doe, and I’m here to help you understand job advertisements in German. It can be tricky, but with a little practice, you’ll become comfortable reading them. We’re going to focus on “Anforderungen,” which means “requirements.”

What are “Anforderungen”?

“Anforderungen” are the things a company needs from a potential employee. They tell you what skills, experience, and qualities you need to have to be considered for a job.

Let’s look at some common phrases you’ll see in German job adverts:

  • “Erfahrung im Bereich…” – This means “Experience in the area of…” For example, “Erfahrung im Bereich Marketing” – experience in marketing.
  • “Sehr gute Deutschkenntnisse” – This means “Very good German skills.”
  • “Teamfähigkeit” – This means “Teamwork skills”.
  • “Organisationsvermögen” – This means “Organizational skills”.
  • “Selbstständiges Arbeiten” – This means “Working independently”.

Here’s an example of an entire requirement section from a job ad:

“Wir suchen einen engagierten Mitarbeiter (m/w/d) mit mindestens zwei Jahren Erfahrung im Kundenservice und sehr guten Deutschkenntnissen. Teamfähigkeit und Organisationsvermögen sind ebenfalls wichtig. Selbstständiges Arbeiten wird erwartet.”

Translation: “We are looking for a dedicated employee (m/w/d) with at least two years of experience in customer service and very good German skills. Teamwork skills and organizational skills are also important. Independent work is expected.”

Another example:

Mary Carry needs “Ausbildung im Bereich Logistik” – a training in logistics.

If you see “abgeschlossenes Studium” – a completed degree – you know the company wants someone with a university education.

Pay attention to words like “wünschen” (wish) and “erfordert” (requires). “Wünschen” means they would like you to have something, but it’s not always essential. “Erfordert” means it’s necessary for the job.

Understanding these “Anforderungen” will help you decide if you’re a good fit for the job. It’s important to honestly assess whether you meet the requirements before applying.

Good luck!
