My First Week in Berlin: Getting Around

The Bus

Buses are everywhere in Berlin. They’re great for shorter distances and areas where the U-Bahn and S-Bahn don’t reach.

The S-Bahn is a regional train that runs through the city centre and suburbs. It’s a good option for travelling further outside the city. It connects to the U-Bahn at many stations.

• Die S-Bahn fährt sehr schnell. (The S-Bahn runs very quickly.)

The Tram (Straßenbahn)

Trams, or Straßenbahnen, are streetcars. They run on tracks above ground and are often found in areas where buses are less frequent.

• Die Straßenbahn fährt langsam. (The tram runs slowly.)
• Ich fahre mit der Straßenbahn in die Altstadt. (I take the tram into the Old Town.)
• Bitte, machen Sie Platz für die Straßenbahn. (Please, make room for the tram.)

Tickets & Info

You can buy tickets at vending machines in the stations. It’s important to validate your ticket before entering the bus, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, or tram. Don’t forget to check the route maps! You can find them at the stations or on the BVG website (www.bvg.de – this is the public transport company).
