Stating country of origin and native language precisely

## Wie sagt man seinen Herkunftsort und seine Muttersprache auf Deutsch?

Hello! My name is John Doe, and I’m learning English. I’ve been asked a lot of questions about where I’m from and what language I speak, and it’s important to know how to answer clearly in German. Let’s take a look.

Woher kommst du? (Where do you come from?)

This is probably the most common question you’ll hear. It asks about your country of origin.

  • Ich komme aus den USA.** (I come from the USA.)
  • Ich komme aus Großbritannien.** (I come from Great Britain.)
  • Ich komme aus Deutschland.** (I come from Germany.) – Even if you’re learning German, you still say “aus Deutschland”.
  • Ich komme aus Italien.** (I come from Italy.)

You always use “aus” (from) after “kommen” (to come). You can use the full name of the country, or just the country name.

Meine Muttersprache ist… (My native language is…)

This asks about your mother tongue – the language you first learned to speak.

  • Meine Muttersprache ist Englisch.** (My native language is English.)
  • Meine Muttersprache ist Deutsch.** (My native language is German.)
  • Meine Muttersprache ist Spanisch.** (My native language is Spanish.)

Mary Carry asked me yesterday, “Was ist deine Muttersprache?” and I replied, “Meine Muttersprache ist Englisch.” It’s very straightforward!

Using it in a conversation:

Let’s say you are meeting someone new at work, Steven. He asks:

Steven: “Wo kommst du?” (Where do you come from?)

You: “Ich komme aus England.” (I come from England.)

Steven: “Und was ist deine Muttersprache?” (And what is your native language?)

You: “Meine Muttersprache ist Englisch.” (My native language is English.)

Important Note:

Even if you speak German fluently, you *still* say “Meine Muttersprache ist Englisch” if English is your first language. It’s a very important detail!

I hope this helps you understand how to answer these questions in German. Keep practicing!
