Sharing Your Weekend – Deutsch with John Doe
Hallo! My name is John Doe, and I’m learning German. Today, we’re going to talk about something really useful: talking about your weekend plans and what you’ve done before. This is a common thing to do in German, and it’s a great way to practice.
Talking About Plans (Pläne)
It’s important to know how to ask about someone’s plans. The basic question is: “Was machst du am Wochenende?” (What are you doing this weekend?)
Here’s a simple response: “Ich gehe ins Kino.” (I’m going to the cinema.)
Or: “Ich treffe mich mit Freunden.” (I’m meeting friends.)
You can also say: “Ich mache Sport.” (I’m doing sport). It’s very common!
And if you don’t have plans: “Nichts Besonderes.” (Nothing special.) – This is a really useful phrase.
Talking About the Past (Vergangenheit)
To talk about what you did last weekend, you use the past tense. The most common past tense is “hatte” (had) + the past participle.
Example: “Letztes Wochenende hatte ich viel Spaß.” (Last weekend I had a lot of fun.)
Or: “Ich war im Park.” (I was in the park.)
Another example: “Ich habe mit meiner Familie gegessen.” (I ate with my family.)
Don’t forget to use “und” (and) to connect your sentences. “Ich war im Park und habe ein Buch gelesen.” (I was in the park and read a book.)
Mary Carry’s Example
Let’s look at Mary Carry’s example: “Letzten Samstag war ich mit meiner Oma im Museum. Am Sonntag habe ich mit meinem Bruder Fußball gespielt.” (Last Saturday I was with my grandma in the museum. On Sunday I played football with my brother.)
Notice how she uses both past tenses to tell a story.
Practical Use
You’ll use this when you meet new people. You can say, “Was machst du dieses Wochenende?” Or, if you want to share something about your week, you could say, “Letzte Woche war ich auf Reisen.” (Last week I was travelling.)
It’s also useful at work. You might say to a colleague, “Was haben Sie am Wochenende gemacht?” (What did you do this weekend?).
Key Phrases to Remember
- Was machst du…? (What are you doing…?)
- Letztes Wochenende (Last weekend)
- Ich habe… (I have…)
- Ich war… (I was…)
- Ich habe Spaß (I had fun)
- Nichts Besonderes (Nothing special)
I hope this helps you! Keep practicing. Viel Erfolg! (Good luck!)
