Job Interview Vocabulary: Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths (Stärken)

This means things you are good at. It’s about showing what you can do.

• “Ich bin sehr zuverlässig.” (I am very reliable.) – Example: “Bitte, ich bin sehr zuverlässig und halte immer meine Deadlines.” (Please, I am very reliable and always meet my deadlines.)
• “Ich habe gute Kommunikationsfähigkeiten.” (I have good communication skills.) – Example: “Während meiner Zeit im Studentenclub war ich dafür verantwortlich, mit den Gästen zu kommunizieren.” (During my time in the student club, I was responsible for communicating with guests.)
• “Ich bin ein Teamplayer.” (I am a team player.) – Example: “Ich arbeite gerne im Team, weil ich glaube, dass wir gemeinsam mehr erreichen können.” (I like working in a team because I believe we can achieve more together.)
• “Meine Stärke liegt in der Problemlösung.” (My strength lies in problem-solving.) – Example: “Im letzten Projekt habe ich viele schwierige Probleme gelöst.” (In the last project, I solved many difficult problems.)

Weaknesses (Schwächen)

This is about being honest about areas where you can improve. Don’t say you have no weaknesses – it sounds unbelievable! Frame it positively.

• “Ich neige dazu, Perfektionist zu sein.” (I tend to be a perfectionist.) – Example: “Manchmal kann das dazu führen, dass ich mehr Zeit für Aufgaben benötige, aber ich arbeite daran, effizienter zu sein.” (Sometimes that can lead to me needing more time for tasks, but I’m working on being more efficient.)
• “Ich habe manchmal Schwierigkeiten mit delegieren.” (I sometimes have difficulty delegating.) – Example: “Ich bin es gewohnt, Dinge selbst zu machen, aber ich verstehe, dass es wichtig ist, Aufgaben zu verteilen.” (I’m used to doing things myself, but I understand that it is important to distribute tasks.)
• “Ich lerne schnell neue Software.” (I quickly learn new software.) – Example: “Ich bin zwar nicht immer sofort ein Experte, aber ich lerne schnell.” (I’m not always an expert immediately, but I learn quickly.)
• “Ich bin manchmal zu kritisch.” (I am sometimes too critical.) – Example: “Ich bin mir dessen bewusst und arbeite daran, positiver zu sein.” (I am aware of this and working on being more positive.)
