Household budget: Income (Einkommen) vs. Expenses

## Mein Haushaltbudget: Einkommen gegen Ausgaben

Hello! My name is John Doe, and I want to help you understand how to manage your household budget in German. It can seem a little complicated at first, but it’s really not. We’re going to look at Einkommen (income) and Ausgaben (expenses).

Was ist Einkommen? (What is Income?)

  • Einkommen is the money you receive. It’s the money coming into your household.

For example, my Einkommen comes from my job as a software developer. I get a regular salary.

  • Ich erhalte ein festes Gehalt. (I receive a fixed salary.)

Other sources of Einkommen could be:

  • Rent money (Miete)
  • Pension (Rente)
  • Child benefit (Kindersicherung)
  • Investment income (Investitionserträge)

Was sind Ausgaben? (What are Expenses?)

  • Ausgaben are the money you spend. It’s the money going out of your household. It’s everything you buy.

Mary Carry spends a lot on groceries. Sie gibt viel Geld für Lebensmittel aus. (She spends a lot of money on food.)

Here are some common types of Ausgaben:

  • Rent (Miete) – the money you pay for your apartment or house.
  • Food (Lebensmittel) – the cost of groceries.
  • Utilities (Nebenkosten) – electricity, water, gas, heating.
  • Transportation (Transport) – public transport or petrol.
  • Entertainment (Unterhaltung) – going to the cinema, eating out.
  • Clothing (Kleidung) – buying new clothes.

Einkommen vs. Ausgaben – Wie sie zusammenpassen (Income vs. Expenses – How they fit together)

The goal of a household budget is to make sure your Einkommen is größer als (greater than) your Ausgaben. If your Ausgaben are more than your Einkommen, you have a deficit – you’re spending more than you earn.

  • If I earn €3,000 per month and my Ausgaben are €2,500 per month, I have €500 left over. Das gibt mir 500 Euro übrig. (That leaves me with 500 Euros.)

It’s important to track both your Einkommen and your Ausgaben regularly. This way you know where your money is going and can make changes if needed.

  • Perhaps I could reduce my spending on entertainment (Unterhaltung) to save money. Vielleicht könnte ich meine Ausgaben für Unterhaltung senken, um Geld zu sparen. (Maybe I could reduce my entertainment spending to save money.)
