Expressing well-being (Mir geht es…)

Mir geht es gut – How to Say You’re Okay in German

Hello! My name is John Doe, and I want to help you learn a really important part of speaking German: how to say how you’re feeling. It’s more than just “I’m fine.” The German language has several ways to express well-being, and knowing them will make conversations much smoother.

The most common way to say “I’m fine” is “Mir geht es gut.” Let’s break it down. “Mir” means “to me” or “for me.” “Gehen” is the verb “to go,” and “gut” means “good.” So, literally, it translates to “It goes well for me.”

Here are some other useful phrases:

  • Mir geht es sehr gut. – I’m very well.
  • Example: “Wie geht es dir, Mary?” – “Mir geht es sehr gut, danke!” (“How are you, Mary?” – “I’m very well, thank you!”)
  • Mir geht es okay. – I’m okay.
  • Example: “Hast du gut geschlafen?” – “Mir geht es okay, danke.” (“Did you sleep well?” – “I’m okay, thank you.”)
  • Mir geht es ganz gut. – I’m doing quite well.
  • Example: “Wie war dein Tag?” – “Mir geht es ganz gut, ein bisschen stressig.” (“How was your day?” – “I’m doing quite well, a bit stressful.”)
  • Mir geht es in Ordnung. – I’m alright.
  • Example: “Wie fühlst du dich?” – “Mir geht es in Ordnung.” (“How are you feeling?” – “I’m alright.”)

You can often use these phrases with “danke” (thank you) to show politeness. It’s also common to ask someone how they are. “Und dir?” (And you?) is a polite way to end a conversation.

Let’s practice! Imagine you meet a colleague, Michael, at the office. He asks, “Wie geht es Ihnen?” (How are you?) You could respond with “Mir geht es gut, danke.” (I’m fine, thank you.)
