Mein Deutsch: Feeling Good About Your Job (or Wanting Something New)

Hello! My name is John Doe, and I’m here to help you learn some useful phrases in German about how you feel about your job – or your desire to change it. It can be tricky to talk about work in a new language, but don’t worry, it’s easier than you think.

1. Saying You Are Happy

Often, you’ll want to express that you enjoy your work. There are several ways to do this.

  • Ich finde meine Arbeit gut.** (I find my work good.)
  • Example: “Ich finde meine Arbeit gut. Ich mag meine Kollegen sehr.” (I find my work good. I like my colleagues very much.)
  • Ich bin mit meiner Arbeit zufrieden.** (I am satisfied with my work.)
  • Example: “Ich bin mit meiner Arbeit zufrieden. Die Aufgaben sind interessant.” (I am satisfied with my work. The tasks are interesting.)
  • Mir gefällt meine Arbeit.** (I like my work.)
  • Example: “Mir gefällt meine Arbeit sehr. Ich lerne viel.” (I like my work very much. I learn a lot.)

2. Expressing Interest in Your Role

Sometimes you want to show that you’re engaged and want to continue developing.

  • Ich bin an meiner Arbeit interessiert.** (I am interested in my work.)
  • Example: “Ich bin an meiner Arbeit interessiert und möchte neue Fähigkeiten erlernen.” (I am interested in my work and would like to learn new skills.)
  • Ich finde die Arbeit herausfordernd.** (I find the work challenging.)
  • Example: “Ich finde die Arbeit herausfordernd, aber ich genieße es.” (I find the work challenging, but I enjoy it.)

3. Talking About a Desire for Change – Gently

Changing jobs is always a sensitive subject. Here are some phrases to use if you want to express a desire for something different.

  • Ich würde gerne eine neue Herausforderung suchen.** (I would like to look for a new challenge.)
  • Example: “Ich würde gerne eine neue Herausforderung suchen, die mich mehr fordert.” (I would like to look for a new challenge that demands more of me.)
  • Ich überlege, andere Möglichkeiten zu prüfen.** (I am considering checking out other possibilities.)
  • Example: “Ich überlege, andere Möglichkeiten zu prüfen, aber ich bin noch nicht bereit zu kündigen.” (I am considering checking out other possibilities, but I am not yet ready to quit.)
  • Ich bin offen für neue Angebote.** (I am open to new offers.)
  • Example: “Ich bin offen für neue Angebote, wenn die Gehaltsentwicklung besser ist.” (I am open to new offers, if the salary development is better.)

4. Simple Phrases for Conversation

  • Wie gefällt Ihnen Ihre Arbeit?** (How do you like your work?)
  • Was machen Sie beruflich?** (What do you do professionally?)

Remember, it’s okay to not be fluent right away. Practice these phrases, and soon you’ll be confidently talking about your work in German!
