Deutsch Schreiben: Die DTZ-Strategie für Briefe
Hello! My name is John Doe, and I’m a German tutor. I help English speakers learning German with a very specific technique for writing letters – it’s called DTZ. It sounds complicated, but it’s actually really simple and incredibly useful.
DTZ stands for three things: Data, Topic, and Zone. It’s a way to quickly organize your thoughts and make sure you include all the necessary information in your letter.
1. Daten (Data)
“Daten” simply means ‘data’ or ‘information’. This is the easiest part. You need to write down the basic details of your letter. This includes:
- The recipient’s name and address.
- Your own name and address.
- The date.
Example: Frau Alice Schmidt, Musterstraße 12, 12345 Berlin; Mein Name ist John Doe, Musterstraße 10, 12345 Berlin; heute, 16. Mai 2024.
2. Thema (Topic)
“Thema” translates to ‘topic’. This is the reason you’re writing the letter. What is it about? Be specific.
Example: Ich schreibe, um mich nach deiner Gesundheit zu erkundigen. (I am writing to inquire about your health.)
Or: Ich schreibe, um ein Geschenk für deine Geburtstagsfeier zu bestellen. (I am writing to order a gift for your birthday party.)
3. Zone (Zone)
“Zone” means ‘area’ or ‘section’. This is where you write the main body of your letter. You need to break it down into smaller sections to make it easier to write and to make your letter clearer. Think of it like creating a plan for what you want to say.
Example: Zuerst möchte ich mich nach deinem Wohlbefinden erkundigen. Dann möchte ich fragen, ob du ein Geschenk für deine Geburtstagsfeier möchtest und welches du dir wünschst. (First, I would like to inquire about your well-being. Then, I would like to ask if you would like a gift for your birthday party and what you would like.)
Practical Use
Let’s say you need to write a letter to your German friend, Mary Carry, asking her about her trip. You would use DTZ like this:
- Daten: Mary Carry, Hauptstraße 5, 60329 Frankfurt am Main; Mein Name ist John Doe, Musterstraße 10, 12345 Berlin; 20. Mai 2024
- Thema: You want to know about her vacation.
- Zone: You write: Wie war deine Reise? Hast du schöne Fotos gemacht? Ich hoffe, du hast eine gute Zeit! (How was your trip? Did you take nice photos? I hope you are having a good time!)
Using DTZ helps you stay focused and ensures you don’t forget any important information. It’s a really helpful tool to improve your German letter writing!
