A practical first-person guide with useful German phrases
I never expected to be involved in a crime situation—but one afternoon in
the city center, I witnessed what looked like an attempted theft. It
happened quickly, and at first I wasn’t even sure what I was seeing.
In this article, I’ll share what happened, how I reacted, and what you can
do in a similar situation, especially if you’re living in Germany and
learning the language.

😳 The moment: Something didn’t feel right
I was walking through a busy area when I noticed a man getting very close
to another person’s bag. His movements seemed suspicious.
👉 „Ich habe eine verdächtige Situation gesehen.“
(I saw a suspicious situation.)
Within seconds, it became clear that he was trying to take something.
👉 „Er hat versucht, eine Tasche zu stehlen.“
(He tried to steal a bag.)

🧠 Step 1: I stayed calm and observed
My first instinct was shock—but I didn’t panic. Instead, I focused on what
was happening.
–
What did the person look like?
–
What exactly did they do?
–
Where did it happen?
👉 „Ich habe den Mann genau beobachtet.“
(I observed the man carefully.)
Staying calm helped me react properly.

📞 Step 2: I contacted the police
After the situation ended and the person ran away, I decided to report it.
👉 „Ich habe die Polizei informiert.“
(I informed the police.)
In Germany, reporting incidents—even if you’re unsure—is important. It
helps authorities track patterns and prevent future crimes.

🗣️ Step 3: I described what I saw
When speaking to the police, I tried to give clear details:
👉 „Der Mann war etwa 25 Jahre alt.“
(The man was about 25 years old.)
👉 „Er hatte kurze braune Haare und war sportlich.“
(He had short brown hair and was athletic.)
Even small details can be useful.

⚖️ Step 4: I understood my role as a witness
I realized that I didn’t need to solve the situation myself. My role was to:
–
observe
–
report
–
describe
👉 „Ich habe als Zeuge geholfen.“
(I helped as a witness.)
That’s often enough.

⚠️ What I avoided doing
Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t:
–
confront the person directly
–
put myself in danger
–
ignore the situation
–
assume someone else would act
Safety always comes first.

🧩 What I learned
This experience taught me that you don’t need to be a hero to help—you just
need to be aware and responsible. Acting calmly and reporting what you see
can make a real difference.
If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, remember:
Stay calm, stay safe, and communicate clearly.

✨ Final thoughts
Situations like this can happen anywhere, but being prepared helps you
respond confidently. For me, it was also a chance to use my German in a
real-life situation—and that made the experience even more valuable.
