Filling out an application for housing (WBS)

Filling Out a WBS: Your First Step to an Apartment in Germany

Hello! My name is John Doe, and I want to help you understand something really important when you’re looking for an apartment in Germany – the WBS (Wohnungsbewerbung Selbstauskunft). It’s a very common form you’ll need to fill out. Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it looks!

What is a WBS?

The WBS is basically an application form for an apartment. Landlords (Wohnungsinhaber) use it to get to know you and see if you’re a good tenant. It asks for lots of information about you, like where you live now, your job, and your personal details.

Sections of the WBS

The WBS has several sections. Let’s look at a few important ones:

  • Persönliche Daten (Personal Data): This is where you write your name, address, date of birth, and contact information.
  • Example: Mein Name ist John Doe. (My name is John Doe.)
  • Berufliche Angaben (Professional Information): You’ll need to tell them about your job – your employer’s name, your position, and how long you’ve worked there.
  • Example: Ich arbeite bei Siemens als Softwareentwickler. (I work at Siemens as a software developer.)
  • Mietverhältnisse (Rental History): This section asks about your previous rentals. It’s important to be honest here.
  • Example: Ich habe zuvor in einer Studentenwohnheim in München gewohnt. (I previously lived in a student dormitory in Munich.)
  • Selbstauskunft (Self-Declaration): This is a longer section where you answer a lot of questions about yourself, like your hobbies, your financial situation (you might need to provide proof of income), and your reasons for wanting to rent the apartment.
  • Example: Ich bin zuverlässig und pünktlich. (I am reliable and punctual.)

Important Tips

  • Read Carefully: Always read each question very carefully before answering.
  • Be Honest: Don’t lie on your WBS. It can cause problems later.
  • Provide Proof: If you’re asked to provide proof of income (Gehaltsabrechnung), make sure you have it ready.
  • Keep a Copy: Make a copy of the completed WBS for your records.

Using the WBS in Daily Life

You’ll use the WBS when you contact a landlord, either by email or in person, to ask about an apartment or to schedule a viewing (Besichtigung). Mary Carry uses the completed form to send to potential landlords after she finds an apartment she likes.
