DTZ Reading Part 2: Detailed comprehension of texts

Deutschlesen Part 2: Vertiefung des Textverständnisses

Hello! My name is John Doe, and I’m a language tutor here to help you understand Deutschlesen Part 2. This part of the course is all about going deeper into what you read. It’s not just about reading the words; it’s about truly understanding them.

Let’s say you’re reading an email from your boss, Herr Schmidt. The email says: “Bitte senden Sie mir den Bericht bis Freitag.” (Please send me the report by Friday.) If you just read the words, you know what it says. But to understand it fully, you need to know what a “Bericht” is (a report), and what “bis Freitag” means (by Friday).

This part of the course focuses on that deeper understanding. We look for the important information – the key words, the main ideas.

Imagine you’re reading a newspaper article about a new building in Berlin. The article might say: “Die neue Bibliothek ist hoch und modern.” (The new library is tall and modern.) You don’t just know it’s a library. You understand its size and style.

It’s useful when you’re reading instructions, like a recipe in German, or a contract. For example, if the recipe says, “Rühren Sie die Zutaten fünf Minuten lang,” (Stir the ingredients for five minutes) you need to understand what “Rühren” means (to stir), and what “Zutaten” means (ingredients).

Another example is at work. You might be reading a document outlining a project. A sentence might be, “Die Ergebnisse müssen bis zum 31. Dezember präsentiert werden.” (The results must be presented by December 31st.) You need to know what “Ergebnisse” (results) and “präsentieren” (to present) mean.

Don’t worry about understanding every single word immediately. It’s normal to encounter unfamiliar words. Focus on the overall meaning and the main points. With practice, you’ll become much better at reading German texts and truly grasping what they’re saying.

Mary Carry believes that consistent practice is key. Reading a little bit each day will make a huge difference.
