Employee Benefits in Germany: Vacation Days and Bonuses

Hello! My name is Klaus Schmidt, and I work as a project manager at a software company in Munich. I want to explain some important things about employee benefits in Germany, specifically vacation days (Urlaubsanspruch) and bonuses (Bonuszahlung). It can seem a little complicated at first, but it’s really quite straightforward.

Vacation Days (Urlaubsanspruch)

Every employee in Germany has the right to paid vacation. This is called “Urlaubsanspruch”. It’s not just a nice thing to have; it’s a legal right.

How it works:

You earn vacation days based on how long you work. Usually, you get 20 days of paid vacation per year if you work full-time (Vollzeit). However, this can change depending on your contract.

Example: “Ich habe 25 Urlaubstage im Jahr.” (I have 25 vacation days per year.)

Or: “Wir müssen unseren Urlaub im Voraus beantragen.” (We have to request our vacation in advance.)

Bonuses (Bonuszahlung)

Bonuses are extra payments you receive for good work. They aren’t always given, and the amount depends on your company and your performance.

Types of Bonuses:

  • Leistungsbonus: A performance bonus, tied to your individual achievements. “Mein Chef hat mir einen Leistungsbonus für das erfolgreiche Projekt gegeben.” (My boss gave me a performance bonus for the successful project.)
  • Jahresbonus: A yearly bonus, often distributed at the end of the year. “Die Firma hat einen Jahresbonus für alle Mitarbeiter ausgezahlt.” (The company paid out a yearly bonus to all employees.)

Practical Usage

Let’s say you’re planning a trip. You would talk to your employer about your vacation days: “Können Sie mir bitte sagen, wie viele Urlaubstage ich noch habe?” (Can you please tell me how many vacation days I have left?)

If you receive a bonus, you might say: “Ich werde den Bonus für etwas Schönes sparen.” (I will save the bonus for something nice.)

Or: “Ich habe einen Bonus bekommen, weil ich gut gearbeitet habe.” (I received a bonus because I worked well.)

I hope this gives you a basic understanding. It’s important to read your employment contract carefully to understand your specific rights and responsibilities.
