Understanding German University Degrees
Hello! My name is John Doe, and I’m here to explain a little about how university degrees work in Germany. It can seem complicated at first, but it’s actually quite straightforward.
Bachelor (Bachelorstudium)
The Bachelor is the first stage of university study. It’s typically around four years long. You choose a subject, like ‘Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen’ (business engineering) or ‘Germanistik’ (German studies).
- Example: “Ich studiere Informatik im Bachelor.” (I study computer science as a Bachelor.)
After completing your Bachelor, you’ll get a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) if it’s a science subject, or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) if it’s a humanities subject. You then have the option to continue your studies.
Master (Masterstudium)
The Master is the next step. You must first have a Bachelor degree to apply. A Master degree usually takes two to three years. You choose a more specialized area within your original Bachelor subject. For example, someone with a Bachelor in ‘Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen’ could do a Master in ‘Finanzwesen’ (finance).
- Example: “Nach meinem Bachelor in Geschichte mache ich jetzt einen Master in Archäologie.” (After my Bachelor in history, I’m now doing a Master in archaeology.)
You’ll get a Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Master of Arts (M.A.) upon completion. Many Master programmes are ‘Vertiefung’ (specialization tracks) which means you focus on a specific area within your degree.
Doctorate (Promotion / Doktorat)
The Doctorate – or Promotion – is the highest academic degree. It’s the longest stage, typically taking five to six years after completing your Master. You conduct original research and write a Dissertation (thesis). This Dissertation must be very high quality.
- Example: “Meine Promotion ist in der Geschichte der Romantik.” (My doctorate is in the history of Romanticism.)
After successfully defending your Dissertation, you become a Doktor (Dr.). This title is often used after your name.
Practical Use
Having these degrees helps you in many ways. For example, if you have a ‘Master in Marketing’, you might work as a Marketing Manager in a company. If you have a ‘Doktorat in Medizin’, you could become a Research Physician. All three degree types are required for many high-level jobs and for academic positions.
