Grammar: Conjunction ‘obwohl’ (although)

Learning German: Understanding “Obwohl”

Hi everyone, my name is David, and I’m learning German. One thing that’s been tricky for me is understanding this word: “obwohl”. It’s a conjunction – that means it connects two parts of a sentence – but it translates to “although” or “even though” in English. It’s really important, and I want to explain it to you in a way that hopefully makes sense.

Basically, “obwohl” means that something is happening despite something else. It shows a contrast.

Here are some simple examples:

Ich habe Hunger, obwohl ich gerade erst gegessen habe.

(I am hungry, although I just ate.)

Mary ist müde, obwohl sie viel getrunken hat.

(Mary is tired, even though she has drunk a lot.)

Der Himmel ist blau, obwohl es windig ist.

(The sky is blue, although it is windy.)

You’ll often hear it used in everyday conversations, like this:

John geht ins Fitnessstudio, obwohl er keine Zeit hat.

(John goes to the gym, although he has no time.)

Or in a work setting:

Wir müssen den Bericht fertigstellen, obwohl wir gestresst sind.

(We must finish the report, although we are stressed.)

Another way to think about it is that the first part of the sentence is true, but the second part contradicts it a little.

Obwohl die Sonne scheint, ist es kalt.

(Although the sun is shining, it is cold.)

It’s a really common word, so don’t worry if you don’t get it straight away. Keep practicing, and you’ll become more comfortable using it.

I’m still learning, and I hope this explanation helps!
