Comparing health insurance providers (Krankenkassen)

Vergleichen von Krankenkassen – How to Choose Your Health Insurance in Germany

Hello! My name is Paul, and I want to explain something important for anyone living in Germany: health insurance, or Krankenkassen. It can seem complicated, but it’s manageable.

What is a Krankenkasse?

A Krankenkasse is a health insurance company. Think of it like your health insurance in England, but it works slightly differently. There are two main types: gesetzliche Krankenkassen (public) and private Krankenkassen.

Gesetzliche Krankenkassen (Public)

Most Germans belong to a gesetzliche Krankenkasse. They are funded by contributions from both employees and employers. The most common ones are:

  • AOK
  • TK (Techniker Krankenkasse)
  • Barmer

Example: “Ich bin Mitglied bei der AOK. Das bedeutet, ich zahle monatlich einen Beitrag.” (I am a member of the AOK. That means I pay a monthly contribution.)

What do they cover?

Generally, gesetzliche Krankenkassen cover a lot – doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, and some therapies. “Ich gehe zum Arzt, weil ich mich nicht gut fühle.” (I go to the doctor because I don’t feel well.) They provide a standard level of care.

Private Krankenkassen (Private)

Private Krankenkassen are for people who don’t qualify for gesetzliche Krankenkassen. This could be because you’re self-employed or have a higher income. They often offer more private rooms in hospitals and sometimes faster appointments. “Mary hat eine private Krankenkasse und sie kann oft schneller einen Termin bekommen.” (Mary has a private health insurance and she often gets an appointment quicker.)

Choosing a Krankenkasse – It’s Your Decision

When you choose a Krankenkasse, you need to consider:

  • Contribution (Beitrag): This is the monthly amount you pay. It varies between Krankenkassen and depends on your income.
  • Benefits (Leistungen): What exactly is covered? Each Krankenkasse has slightly different rules.
  • Regionality (Region): Some Krankenkassen are stronger in certain areas of Germany.

Example: “Ich habe mich für die TK entschieden, weil sie in meiner Nähe eine gute Reputation hat.” (I chose TK because it has a good reputation in my area.)

Important Note: You usually choose your Krankenkasse when you start a new job. Your employer will help you with this process. It’s a good idea to compare a few options before making your final decision.
