Pharmacy vocabulary: Prescriptions, over-the-counter

## Pharmacy Vocabulary – Deutsch für Englischlerner

Hello, my name is John Doe, and I’m a pharmacist here in Germany. I want to help you learn some important words and phrases related to pharmacies – it’s a really useful area of German to know, whether you’re travelling, talking to family, or even working in healthcare.

Let’s start with Rezept (prescription). This is a very important word. A Rezept is a written order from a doctor for medicine. You can’t just buy medicine that a doctor has prescribed for someone else. It’s the law!

  • Beispiel: “Der Arzt hat mir ein Rezept für Paracetamol ausgestellt.” (The doctor gave me a prescription for paracetamol.)

“Bitte geben Sie mir das Rezept, wenn Sie es haben.” (Please give me the prescription if you have it.)

Now, let’s talk about rezeptfreie Medikamente (over-the-counter medicines). These are medicines you can buy without a doctor’s Rezept. They are usually for minor illnesses or conditions.

  • Beispiel: “Ich habe Ibuprofen gegen meine Kopfschmerzen gekauft.” (I bought ibuprofen for my headache.)

“Das ist ein rezeptfreies Medikament für den Niesen.” (This is an over-the-counter medication for a runny nose.)

Here are some other useful words:

  • Packungsbeilage – (package leaflet) This is the leaflet that comes with your medicine, it explains how to take the medicine and what the side effects might be.
  • Beispiel: “Bitte lesen Sie die Packungsbeilage sorgfältig.” (Please read the package leaflet carefully.)
  • Dosierung – (dosage) This refers to the amount of medicine you should take.
  • Beispiel: “Die Dosierung beträgt 500 mg.” (The dosage is 500 mg.)
  • Nebenwirkungen – (side effects) These are unwanted effects that can occur when taking medicine.
  • Beispiel: “Welche Nebenwirkungen sind möglich?” (What are the possible side effects?)

Finally, let’s look at some phrases you might use in a pharmacy:

  • “Ich brauche ein Rezept für…” (I need a prescription for…)
  • “Haben Sie dieses Medikament rezeptfrei?” (Do you have this medicine over-the-counter?)
  • “Wie dosiere ich das rezeptpflichtige Medikament?” (How do I take the prescription medication?)

I hope this gives you a good starting point for learning about pharmacy vocabulary in German. Remember to always ask questions if you aren’t sure about something!

My name is Mary Carry. Good luck with your learning.
