Understanding ‘Mehrere’ – Several in German
Hello! My name is Klaus Schmidt, and I teach German to English speakers. Today, we’re going to look at a really common and important word: mehrere. It translates to “several” or “multiple” in English. It’s a bit tricky at first, but with a few examples, you’ll get the hang of it.
Think of mehrere as a way to say you have more than one, but not a specific number. It’s a general term.
Let’s look at some sentences:
- Ich habe mehrere Bücher. (I have several books.)
- Mary hat mehrere Kinder. (Mary has several children.)
- John braucht mehrere Stifte. (John needs several pens.)
- Wir haben mehrere Termine am Montag. (We have several meetings on Monday.)
- Die Firma hat mehrere Mitarbeiter. (The company has several employees.)
Notice how we don’t use numbers like “three” or “five”. We always use mehrere.
You’ll often hear mehrere in a work context. For example:
- “Das Projekt benötigt mehrere Teammitglieder.” (The project needs several team members.)
Or, in a more casual conversation:
- “Ich habe mehrere Pläne für das Wochenende.” (I have several plans for the weekend.)
Another good way to practice is to think about things you have in your life – tools, objects, people – and try to describe them using mehrere.
Don’t worry about getting it perfect right away. Practice is key! Viel Erfolg! (Good luck!)
